2012 Visionary Woman Award

OWL's Visionary Woman Award honors a woman who has contributed significantly to helping women advance in eye care.  The award will be presented at OWL's signature Monday evening reception held in conjunction with the ASCRS annual meeting in Chicago.

Finalists

Tamara Bogetti, MBA began her career as a scientist at Miravant Medical Technologies and demonstrated early leadership by mentoring women colleagues and building a forum to showcase their research. Convinced she would accomplish more through teamwork, Ms. Bogetti worked across departments at Allergan on Phase IV studies, receiving multiple Awards of Excellence and securing a patent on cyclosporine and its use in ocular rosacea. While at AMO, Ms. Bogetti initiated the post-market study and consultant management processes hiring/mentoring an all female team. Recognized throughout the industry for her professional achievements, Ms. Bogetti believes that her greatest contribution is in connecting people and helping them build confidence – especially women. Now a publisher at Bryn Mawr Communications, Ms. Bogetti continues to mentor colleagues and connect physicians and industry representatives, kindling productive relationships and mutual opportunities for advancement.

Suzanne Bruno, MBA, COE is the Administrator of Horizon Eye Care, a comprehensive eye care practice with 10 physicians in six locations in Southern New Jersey, including optical shops and an ambulatory surgery center.  Ms. Bruno has been an active member of American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators (ASOA) for more than 20 years, serving on the board of directors, presenting at meetings, penning articles, and promoting networking among peers.  When Ms. Bruno joined the workforce in her 20s, she was shocked that talented women often took a back seat to their male peers.  She immediately began to encourage women colleagues to do and say the things they believed in.  As ASOA President from 2008 to 2009, Ms. Bruno sought out new leaders for volunteer assignments as a way to help her peers develop skills and confidence, and a way to strengthen the organization with new ideas and energy.  Ms. Bruno encourages young women in ophthalmology to be leaders, even if no one is yet following them.  “Lead yourself in the direction you aspire to,” she says.

Marguerite McDonald, MD performed the world’s first laser vision correction procedure, and has over 1200 publications in the field of refractive surgery. She was the first female president of both ASCRS and ISRS. Dr. McDonald was a founding member of OWL, and was the only physician on the original OWL Board. She has participated in OWL programs that teach leadership and management skills. Dr. McDonald has also trained many women as cornea fellows, residents, technicians, and business staff, as well as at national sales meetings and one-on-one tutorials with corporate executives and trainees. Dr. McDonald takes an active role in advancing women’s careers through mentoring, suggesting them for board positions and promotions, and calls/letters of recommendation.
