Adrienne L. Graves, PhD is a visual scientist by training and a global industry leader in ophthalmology. She joined Santen in 1995, was responsible for 3 NDA approvals, and was named the first woman and first non-Japanese global corporate officer.

Prior to joining Santen, Dr. Graves spent nine years with Alcon Laboratories, Inc., beginning in 1986 as a Senior Scientist. She progressed through various roles, including Director of International Ophthalmology.

In 1984, Mirfee Ungier, MD, opened a solo ophthalmology practice that she built into one of the best woman-owned practices in the United States. Today, Dr. Ungier has 30 years of surgical experience and more than 5,000 successful cataract surgeries on record.  She accomplished this with a spouse, two children and discouragement from male seniors. When Dr. Ungier began her ophthalmology practice, there were no women shadows to fall within, and she did a lot of work for herself. Despite this, it was important for her to give back to the community.

When asked to chair the Women’s Task Force at the Cleveland Academy of Medicine in the early 1990’s, she saw it as an opportunity to focus on many of the women’s issues in medicine. She combined that with chairing her hospital’s CME committee, and set up physician educational programs featuring women speakers and women’s topics. Dr. Ungier subsequently became Chief of Staff at that hospital and she was the first and only woman to hold such a position in her region. She has maintained a leadership position at Case Western Reserve University by serving on their Alumni Board and by mentoring women residents.

Today, Dr. Ungier is still one of only two women ophthalmologists among 20 where she operates, yet with the abundance of talented young women ophthalmologists today, she has paved the way for many more.

Catalyst Award

Who should OWL recognize as someone who has gone the extra mile to make sure women have opportunities to advance in their careers?

Tammy Bogetti, while at Allergan and AMO, hired and mentored multiple women in ophthalmology. She helped to start the medical marketing department at AMO, leading a team of female employees.  These women have gone on to be successful in the marketing divisions at ophthalmic companies. Ms. Bogetti has made connecting people a focus of hers, and something that she has become known for in the industry. These connections and introductions have helped small business owners grow their client base, have helped physicians gain valuable consulting roles with industry and have helped people (men and women) advance their careers. Needless to say, Ms. Bogetti loves helping others through relationship building and by providing a positive attitude. As publisher at BMC, Ms. Bogetti has mentored females within the company, launched various initiatives that provide education to ophthalmologists and optometrists and recently, has started an all digital publication focusing on the future leaders in ophthalmology.

Heather Ready has been Vice President of Marketing at Acufocus since July 2011. Prior to that she spent two years as the Director of Field Marketing at USGI and a further year there as the company's sales director.

Ms. Ready sees her role as helping to remove roadblocks out of others' pathway to success. To that end, she has served as a mentor, team manager, role model and leader to women of several different generations for the past 25 years in the eye care industry. This has always been one of her greatest joys.

Ms. Ready's goal is always to aid colleagues in finding “their happiness” and best areas of contribution. She finds it inspiring and rewarding to help expand their scope and goals through a mixture of active listening, “what if” encouragement, leading by example, and challenging their comfort zone, thus helping them to excel. Ms. Ready especially loves to see colleagues' look of accomplishment when a goal is reached.

It has always been Ms. Ready's goal to give back and pay forward in her industry. She finds it rewarding to know that through the years she has served as a catalyst in the professional development of many women who are friends and colleagues.
